We cannot lose sight of the primary goals of regulators
The Government has released a policy paper looking at the role of regulators in driving growth. This coincided with a meeting in Downing Street where the Chancellor met with regulators to discuss their ideas.

The policy paper is an Action Plan looking at how we get to the government’s goal of cutting the overall burden of regulation to stimulate growth. It includes significant input from regulators such as Natural England, the Environment Agency and Health Safety Executive.
Prospect will be going through proposals with our members to properly understand the potential impact on them and the work that they do.
Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect, said:
“Regulation and the way it is overseen can always be improved, particularly when it comes to freeing up economic activity. But we cannot lose sight of the primary goals of regulators, be they protection of the environment or ensuring people are safe in their workplace.
“Regulators are essential to maintaining the resilience of the UK as a whole and our long-term economic stability is dependent on that resilience.
“Sustainable economic growth must also be founded on a regulatory system in which expert staff are deeply involved at all stages. This requires better and sustainable resourcing of government agencies that have been hammered by cuts for over a decade.”
