Prospect urges Prime Minister to work with unions on civil service reforms
Prospect General Secretary Mike Clancy has written to the Prime Minister on behalf of members in the civil service following a series of government announcements on civil service reform.
In the letter, Clancy argues that Prospect members are willing to engage in a debate about reform, but also warned against some of the ways in which the conversation has been conducted by government so far.
In particular, Clancy focused on the rhetoric about regulation, which positions regulation as a blocker of economic growth rather than an enabler of it. He also cautioned the Prime Minister about the nature of some of the media briefings around these interventions which he argued has been “divisive and is not conducive to a respectful conversation” about reform.
Clancy urged closer engagement between the government and unions, asking the Prime Minister to “work in much closer partnership with trade unions like Prospect, including us at the earliest possible stage in conversations about change.”

In a webinar with members on Wednesday, Clancy and Prospect Deputy General Secretary Steve Thomas said that Prospect would be seeking more clarity from government on the reform agenda and gathering evidence from members to feed in to the process.
