Building a union that’s out of this world

A union for space and satellite applications

Most space industry workers are not in a union. We want to change that.

The UK is a global leader in space technology: 1 in 8 satellites are manufactured or designed here. Space services, like satellite data, underpin 18% of the UK’s GDP.

Workers in space and satellite applications are some of the country’s most well-qualified; but problems like fixed-term contracts, unfair visa rules and poor progression lead many to feel insecure, undervalued and underpaid for the work they do.

Who are our members in space and satellite applications?

There are 55,000 workers across the space supply chain, employed across small startups, research institutions, big firms and the public sector.

Our members work in manufacturing, satellite launching and servicing, earth observation and the application of satellite data. They do a huge range of roles, including engineers, technicians, software developers, data analysts, researchers, scientists and business support professionals.

Prospect represents 50,000 workers across science and technology. With over 100 years’ experience fighting for members in scientific research, aviation, tech, defence and public services, we are in the strongest place to build a union for space.

We are at the forefront of tackling the many challenges faced by workers in space and satellite applications: we’ve been a strong voice in opposition to damaging visa rules and underinvestment in STEM funding; taken sexist employers to task; campaigned for rights of workers in the new AI era, and joined forces with other unions to demand good, green jobs

We will support you to speak up in your workplace for better pay and conditions. We will help you make the case for space workers to MPs and Government departments, and if you have an issue while you’re a member we’ll back you every step of the way.

UK SPACE 2025

Our General Secretary Mike Clancy spoke at the UK Space Conference 2025 on how the space sector must give workers a real voice to attract and retain talent. He talked about how the upcoming Employment Rights Act gives more employers the opportunity to improve job quality working with trade unions.
